In their Own Words - 2017

Hello, my name Karen Butler-Smith and I am the mother of Danielle Smith and the grandmother of Amari (2 years old) and Damir (9 months old) Smith.  I learned about Young Lives through Danielle’s school when she became pregnant with Amari in 2012.  I was looking for a program that would encourage her and help her cope with becoming a teen mom.  Danielle and I attended a Young Lives parenting class and she was welcomed by the teen moms as well as the leaders.  She immediately wanted to become a part of this program.  I was also looking for a ministry to get involved with and I liked the atmosphere.  As I sat and observed the way the leaders interacted with the teen moms and children, the Lord laid it upon my heart to join this ministry.  This ministry has helped me to cope with being the mother of a teen mom, because it has not been easy.  I am a single mother/grandmother myself.  There were days when I wanted to throw in the towel.  I would contact the Regional Director, Sharon Holland, and she would encourage and minister to me.   Danielle again became pregnant in 2013 and had my second gramandbabyROL.jpg grandson, Damir.  I’m not going to say that I was overcome with joy because I wasn’t.   After seeking God and talking with my pastor, the Lord impressed upon me that He was in control and that these babies are a blessing and not a curse.  Since Dani has had Damir, she has started to mature and now realizes that she must put forth her best effort to provide for her sons.  In 2013 I had the opportunity to go to camp with Young Lives.  It was the best week of our lives.  The young ladies and their babies had a wonderful time.  They were surrounded by other teen moms, leaders and ministers that ministered and loved on them in a way I have never experienced.  I bonded with the moms and it brought me such joy to know that these mothers and their babies were offered an experience that they will cherish for a lifetime.
They let Dani know that no matter how many times you fall, God is there to pick you up, dust you off and help you to get to your purpose.   In working with the ministry, my youngest and oldest daughters, Kyra Smith and Nicole Butler, also decided to join to support their sister.  Young Lives is a positive program and your support is being used in a way that is drawing these young ladies away from the streets and into seeking God for direction for their lives.
